Seventh-day Adventist
Periodical & Obituary Index

The Seventh-day Adventist Periodical and Obituary Index (SDAPI) provides indexing to approximately 40 Adventist journals and magazines with coverage from the 1970s to the present. The index is produced by the Adventist Digital Library and funded by the Association of Seventh-day Adventist Librarians (ASDAL). The database contains almost 730,000 citations.

Between 2021 and 2023, I oversaw the migration of SDAPI from an outdated platform to a new, robust database software hosted by the Adventist Digital Library, called Hyku. I was involved at all levels of the migration, from scoping features and functionality for web developers to build, to countless hours of user testing and bug reporting, to metadata preparation and manual clean-up of thousands of records. All along the way I answered to the SDAPI Advisory Committee, a governing body made up of Adventist library directors whose institutions financially support both SDAPI and the Adventist Digital Library. I continue to maintain SDAPI, training student employees to complete the continuous indexing and attachment of full-text article PDFs to this growing Adventist database.

Major Accomplishments:

  • Saved the project $4,000 by learning OpenRefine so I could prepare 16,000+ records for import without employing a contractor.

  • Added over 4,000 full-text article PDFs to existing citations, making the database keyword-searchable for the first time in its 50 year history.

  • Manually tagged 4,200 Peer Reviewed articles from Adventist periodicals, making it possible for students to filter for scholarly articles for the first time.
